People and Animal Learning Services
http://palstherapy.org/
I began as a volunteer for a year with People and Animal Learning Services (PALS) and then became an intern. This internship helped to fulfill my degree requirements. It is a non-profit organization focused on providing equine therapy for at-risk youth and individuals with a variety of disabilities, impairments, and conditions of all ages. I helped to research funding opportunities and applied to various grants for PALS. Another area in which I helped their program is adjust their website to be more user friendly and portray everything their organization would like to. Lastly, I assisted with development of programs and activities for the summer camps and to be used in lessons with individuals.

Afro-Plan International School, Arusha, Tanzania
https://envaya.org/afro-planinternational/post/12
To fulfill my internship requirement, I was able to travel abroad to Arusha, Tanzania in Africa. While here, I worked in Afro-Plan International School as a teacher and assistant in any way necessary. In order to converse with the children and staff, I was forced to quickly learn basic Kiswahili. In my classroom, I taught the children basic english, mathematics, and songs. Another responsibility I took on was offering assistance in the preparation and serving of food for the children. I was able to partake in visiting the student’s homes to better understand their daily lives and offer these families assistance by providing various food items.

Internship Arusha, Tanzania
http://www.volunteerhq.org/volunteer-in-tanzania
For my internship in Arusha, Tanzania in Africa, I used this organization to plan and organize my experience and trip. I lived in a home with 30 individuals from all over the world ranging from Canada, Saudi Arabia, Australia, England, Thailand, etc. This living environment allowed me to learn about other cultures and ways of living. On weekends, I was able to travel around the country and experience a tour of a coffee plantation and go on a safari. I was able to build relationships with the staff and experience traditional practices and ceremonies with these individuals.

Personal Blog in Arusha, Tanzania
http://tanzaniaadventures.weebly.com/
As a part of my internship requirements, I was to either journal or write a blog to keep track of my experiences and daily life in Africa. This blog not only tells about my experiences but serves as a writing sample for me as well. There are pictures and background information included in the blog to allow other reading this information to have a general understanding. It was used on the Hutton Honors International Experience Program’s website to allow others to learn about my experience in Tanzania and give them a better understanding about the country should they choose to study or travel there.

Middle Way House provides women, children, and animals with a safe place to come due to domestic violence. Housing, therapy, and support services are offered to all who come searching for help; however, housing is only offered upon availability. I underwent extensive training to become a volunteer and choose to be a tutor for the children living at Middle Way House. Tutoring required me to be creative to explain homework and problems in a way the child would understand and be patient since most children were below grade level.

Delta Gamma
http://www.indiana.edu/~deltag/
I am a member of Delta Gamma, Theta Chapter at Indiana University. Throughout my time in Delta Gamma, I have taken on numerous roles and responsibilities. I was required to live in the sorority house with 115 women from my sophomore year until I graduated. As a member, I participated in philanthropic events throughout the greek system, served as a spokesperson for Delta Gamma in the Greek Awards process, and coordinated Greek Week participation for Delta Gamma. Since I transferred schools and Theta chapter had never had a transfer, I developed a program to make the transition smoother for any Delta Gamma transfer in the future. Another role I took on in the chapter was a more serious role and required extensive training; I served as a safe sister who was the trained house contact for any sister experiencing sexual assault or abuse.

During my time on House Corporation, I took the initiative to research and collect all necessary information in regards to various catering and chef options available due to the displeased members of the sorority house. I was required to take into account the budget and work with the Vice President of Finances in our sorority and our chapter’s Finance Advisor to determine feasible options for catering companies. Eventually, I was able to present all of my findings, recommend a solution to the problem, and it resulted in the hiring of a new catering company. Another problem I stressed the need for was new furniture through the use of photographs and physical example. As a result, House Corporation agreed to purchase new desks for every individual and develop a plan to purchase new dressers, bed frames, and other furniture items over the next 5 years.

As Director of House Management and a member of Delta Gamma, another sister and I took the initiative to change the food service offered at the sorority house due to the displeased members. After a semester of research, interviews, surveying, and collecting as much information as possible, Karlie and I presented our findings and recommendation to all of House Corporation. A vote was taken and Campus Cooks was selected to be the new food service used. This partnership required weekly meetings held by Karlie and myself with 6-10 members of Delta Gamma to plan the menu and voice any concerns or complaints the house may have. Karlie and I then took this information to weekly meetings we had with the chefs, our house mom, and the campus cooks manager for our campus.

During my freshman year of college at the University of Kentucky, I participated in the dance marathon, DanceBlue. The cause benefits the pediatric oncology unit in the local hospital and is one close to my heart. I was one of 66 members on the Delta Gamma team. My sorority sponsored a 6 year old child, named Hallie, who was dealing with cancer. Out of support for Hallie, we would take turns attending treatment with her or visiting her while she was in the hospital for procedures. When she was doing well, we would have Hallie over to the house for dinner and play games or dress up with her.
