Even though I arrived shortly after the system was up (19 cell sites) I was the Director of Engineering for the first cellular system in the USA. Several of the "firsts" in wireless came from my organization that are now standard practices worldwide. I gave speeches in the mid 80s on how I was going to put a phone in every lady’s purse and every man’s pocket and was considered to be visionary for the wireless industry. Because of our achievements in the USA we expanded internationally as can be seen from the links in this section on my Repio Page.

We spent over 2 years to win the Tender to be the first cellular provider in Poland. France Telecom was our partner and this was one of the first Western investments/business in Eastern Europe. The challenges we faced and lessons learned were unbelievable because everything had to be sourced outside of Poland. We were successful in launching the business in six months from the granting of the spectrum to the first wireless call. I had a great team that beat all the odds and I especially thank Nokia Network Systems for their contribution to the venture. This was their first major deal outside of Finland and they delivered a working system with special mobile phones on time. This business changed the History of Poland as a communications equipped society was the catalysis for economic growth.

We won this opportunity with Singapore Telecom and some in the press felt we over paid for the spectrum. However they were wrong as NetCom became one of the most successful wireless companies in the world and at one time had the second highest cap value of any Norwegian company. I had a great team lead by Bill Smilie and Tom Williams. SingTel was a great partner and they joined us on several other international ventures.

The Reporter missed the real story with this article. The Qwest employees were responsible for forming United Way of Bangalore. They chose planting trees as their first event for the community. The Reporters did just an OK job with this story because they refused to dig deep to verify that the Athletes had violated the Agreement they signed which caused sponsors to leave. The reason that the contract was not renewed by Qwest was because the USOC failed to take disciplinary action against the skaters who signed the Athlete Agreement, took the stipends and went as far as covering up the Qwest logo for Photos to promote own their own sponsor. The Speedskating Board wanted to take action however the USOC wanted nothing to do with it and thus the beginning of the end! Qwest did meet all of their terms of the agreeement and never took legal action against USS. Thank you Qwest. However now you see what has happened in Sochi. Because of poor funding (caused by several of the skaters violating their contract) training was poor and the zero medals reflect the state of the organization.
